STEPS To get ready for the BIG DAY!
Your puppy's arrival is fast approaching and your new bundle of joy is excited to meet you and your entire family very soon. But with all the excitement, an overwhelming feeling can surface too. If everyone is prepared ahead of time, the transition in your puppy’s first week will be that much easier and less anxiety filled. Here are some important steps to follow prior:
STEP #1 - PUPPY PROOF
If your puppy will be under the age of 8 months, they will be at the perfect age for teething. And you know what that means? Chewing and lots of chewing! Your puppy will chew to soothe their gums, so you want to be prepared.
Go through the area your puppy will spend most of her time and remove anything you don’t want to be chewed, and anything that could pose a threat.
For example:
STEP #2 – BUY NECESSARY SUPPLIES
STEP #3 - Consider HEALTH INSURANCE. Maltipoos and More highly recommends you discuss health insurance with your vet. This should be decided PRIOR to getting your puppy for that extra reassurance. Check out our article on several different options that you should research to help make an informed decision,
STEP #4 - WHICH METHOD TO POTTY TRAIN will you use? - your new puppy has been use to paper training in a whelping box. However there are different methods to training. Depending on your life style, one method may be more effective for you and your family. Please review our different methods of TRAINING.
STEP #5 - CALL A FAMILY MEETING
One of the most important things to remember is your puppy’s brain is like a little sponge and they learn things so quickly at this young age. With this in mind, everyone should be very consistent when teaching your puppy. Your family members should be involved and agree to some basic rules. And everyone should agree to these basic training command words: Sit, Stay, Come, Outside, Off, etc.
STEP #6 - Read over the HEALTH page on this website that answers many questions regarding health of a maltipoo.

STEP #7 – SET UP PUPPY AREA (Her own space) Please review photos on right as it shows a very effective way to set up your puppy room. One thing to remember is puppies are just like young children who need to follow basic rules where clear boundaries have been implemented. For example, if you let your puppy run around the entire downstairs area, they will not properly learn (or it will take a lot longer) where it is ok for them to potty or play. More access = more opportunities to get into mischief. To help set these boundaries, a puppy room or area should be established for your puppy to have their own space. There are several ways to accomplished this, but we highly recommend the set up as illustrated below as this has proven to be a very effective method for setting up a puppy room and potty training, A laundry room, part of a kitchen or individual gates can also be used as long as the puppy is in an enclosed area and not able to escape. |
